Pythagoras and the Masonic Tradition

Pythagoras Lodge No. 41 was formed in 2016 when Schiller Lodge No. 41 and Rob Morris Lodge No. 92 merged. The members of both lodges, finding that most of them already belonged to both, voted to combine them into a single lodge with a new name that would reflect the character of their Masonic work. They chose Pythagoras.

The choice was not arbitrary. Pythagoras of Samos is the only figure in the history of Western thought who founded something that looks, from a distance of two and a half millennia, remarkably like a Masonic lodge: a brotherhood organized around the pursuit of knowledge, bound by oath, practicing degrees of initiation, and united by the conviction that mathematical and moral truth are aspects of the same thing. The founders of modern speculative Freemasonry in the eighteenth century recognized this explicitly. Pythagoras Lodge No. 41 recognized it in 2016. This lodge carries that tradition today.

A Philosopher Born in Samos (c. 570 BCE)

Pythagoras was born around 570 BCE on the island of Samos, off the western coast of Asia Minor in the eastern Aegean. His father, Mnesarchus, was a merchant. Almost nothing about his early life is documented with certainty; what we have comes from accounts written centuries after his death, some of them inclined to present him as a nearly divine figure. What is generally agreed is that he traveled widely as a young man, spending time in Egypt and possibly Babylon, and that these journeys exposed him to mathematical and religious traditions that would shape everything he later built.

He returned to Samos and found it under the rule of the tyrant Polycrates. Around 530 BCE, he left for Croton, a Greek colony on the southern coast of what is now Italy, and he did not return.

The Brotherhood at Croton (c. 530–495 BCE)

At Croton, Pythagoras founded what ancient sources describe as a school, a religious community, and a philosophical society all at once. His followers, known as the Pythagoreans, lived by a rigorous set of rules. They held property in common. They observed periods of silence. They followed a strict diet. They were bound by oaths of loyalty and secrecy. The community was divided into an inner circle, the mathematikoi, who engaged in the full theoretical teaching, and an outer circle, the akousmatikoi, who followed the way of life without access to the deeper instruction.

That structure, with its graduated access to knowledge and its emphasis on both moral conduct and intellectual study, has been recognized as analogous to the Masonic lodge for as long as speculative Freemasonry has existed. It is not a coincidence. The founders of the Grand Lodge tradition were educated men who knew their classical history, and Pythagoras represented something they were deliberately building toward: a brotherhood that treated the search for truth as a form of moral practice.

The school at Croton was politically influential, which eventually made it a target. Around 495 BCE, a faction led by a man named Cylon, who had been refused admission to the brotherhood, organized an attack. Some accounts say Pythagoras escaped to Metapontum, where he died; others say he died in the attack. No account is definitive. What was not destroyed was the tradition.

Number, Harmony, and the Order of Things

The central teaching of Pythagorean philosophy is that number is the foundation of all reality. This was not simply a mathematical observation. For Pythagoras and his followers, the fact that the universe could be understood through mathematical relationships meant that mathematical study was a form of contemplation of the divine order underlying creation. The soul, they taught, was immortal and capable of improvement through the disciplined pursuit of wisdom.

Pythagoras studied music theory and discovered that the intervals of the musical scale correspond to simple numerical ratios: an octave is 2:1, a fifth is 3:2, a fourth is 4:3. This was not a coincidence to be catalogued. It was evidence that the universe was ordered according to principles the human mind could grasp. From music, the same logic extended to astronomy, to geometry, and to the conduct of a good life.

The theorem that bears his name, which states that in any right triangle the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides, had been known in practical form to Egyptian and Babylonian builders for centuries. What the Pythagorean tradition contributed was the proof: a demonstration that this relationship holds necessarily, by the logic of geometry itself, not merely by measurement. That distinction, between knowing that something is true and understanding why it must be true, is one Pythagoreans regarded as the difference between useful craft knowledge and genuine understanding. It is a distinction Freemasonry has always honored.

Pythagoras in Freemasonry: Our Ancient Friend and Brother

Anderson’s Constitutions, published in 1723 as one of the founding documents of modern speculative Freemasonry, named Pythagoras directly: "The Greater Pythagoras, provided the Author of the 47th Proposition of Euclid’s first Book, which, if duly observed, is the Foundation of all Masonry, sacred, civil, and military." Anderson placed an illustration of the theorem on the frontispiece of the Constitutions. This was a deliberate signal about what speculative Freemasonry understood itself to be doing.

The 47th Problem of Euclid, which is the Pythagorean theorem stated in Euclid’s formulation, appears in the Third Degree. In many jurisdictions it is engraved on the Past Master’s jewel. The Second Degree lecture teaches that Geometry is the first and noblest of sciences and the foundation upon which the superstructure of Freemasonry is erected. Pythagoras is referred to in Masonic tradition as "our ancient friend and brother," a phrase that acknowledges both his intellectual legacy and the structural parallel between his community and the Craft.

The parallel is real and runs deep. Both institutions use graduated initiation. Both join moral instruction to intellectual study. Both hold that the discipline of the mind and the improvement of character are related pursuits, not separate ones. Both ask their members to pursue knowledge not merely for practical ends but because understanding the order of things is itself a worthy human activity. Pythagoras did not found a Masonic lodge, but the men who did found Masonic lodges knew his work and saw the kinship plainly.

Why the Name Belonged to Our Predecessor Lodge

When Schiller Lodge No. 41 and Rob Morris Lodge No. 92 merged in 2016, the members chose a name that described what they were doing when they gathered: studying, reasoning, and pursuing the kind of Masonic education that treats the symbols of the Craft as objects worthy of serious thought rather than merely ceremonial acknowledgment.

Pythagoras Lodge No. 41 operated until its merger with Albert Pike Lodge No. 117 in January of 2019, which formed Marquis de Lafayette Lodge No. 41. The intellectual tradition the name represented did not retire with the lodge. A stated communication of this lodge has, in living memory, included presentations on more than 120 distinct proofs of the Pythagorean theorem, with both the Worshipful Master and a Right Worshipful Master of the Scottish Rite lecturing on the mathematical and symbolic dimensions of the work.

Pythagoras believed that the same discipline of mind that allowed a person to understand why the theorem must be true was the discipline that made a person better. This lodge still practices that belief, under a different name, at 16th and Welton.
